Static QR codes

A static QR code really does contain what it shows: the address, the Wi-Fi password or the text is encoded in the black and white artwork itself. There is no server in the middle, which makes it both the sturdiest mode and the final one.

How it works

  1. The content becomes the artwork

What you type in the form is encoded straight into the modules, together with the error correction data that keeps the code readable even when part of it is damaged or covered by a logo.

  2. Nothing sits between code and phone

Whoever points a camera at it gets the data and nothing else: no network request, no intermediary, nothing that can answer slowly or stop answering.

  3. How much you write changes the artwork

More characters mean more modules and a denser weave. A long text or a full vCard produces a code that has to be printed larger to stay readable — the constraint to keep in mind at design time.

  4. Once printed, it is settled

The content cannot be updated remotely. Changing it means generating a new code and replacing the material that carries it.

What it is for

  • The Wi-Fi password

On a card in a room, a waiting area or by the till: guests connect with one tap, without typing a long key and without needing a connection first.

  • The business card

A vCard contact lands in the address book in a second, even at a trade fair or in a warehouse with no signal.

  • Information that does not change

A serial number, an assembly instruction, a coordinate, a service note: printed where it is needed and readable forever.

  • Large runs with no dependencies

Ten thousand labels carrying the same code cost nothing extra and rely on no service staying switched on.

Strengths

  • Works offline and never expires

No connection, no server, no subscription: the code stands on its own for as long as the surface it is printed on exists.

  • No account, no limits

Create it, style it and download it straight away, as many as you like. It is the zero-friction start this product was built on, and it stays that way.

  • Nothing recorded about who scans

With no server in the path there is no data to collect: the scan stays between the phone and the paper.

Limits worth knowing

  • It cannot be edited

A wrong address or an outdated detail can only be fixed by generating a new code and reprinting the material.

  • No analytics

There is no hop to count: you will never know how many times it was scanned, or from where.

  • More content, denser weave

A long address or a vCard with every field produces dense artwork that needs more print area and more contrast to stay readable.

  • It cannot be switched off

For as long as the material circulates, the code leads where it was told to on printing day — even once that content is gone.

When to choose it

Choose static when the content will not change — a password, a contact, a text — or when the person scanning may be offline. If the code goes on material that lives a long time and the destination might change, dynamic saves you a reprint.
